They Dumped 2 Million Tires Into the Ocean — 50 Years Later, Nobody Expected This

Artificial reefs and Osborne Reef were supposed to turn millions of unwanted tires into a new home for marine life. In the 1970s, more than 2 million used tires were dumped off the Florida coast in one of America's most ambitious artificial reef projects. The idea seemed simple: recycle waste, attract fish, and help the ocean. Instead, the steel clips corroded, nylon ropes failed, and thousands of tires broke loose across the seafloor.

More than 50 years later, the consequences are still being dealt with. Florida has spent millions removing the tires, divers have recovered hundreds of thousands of them, and a cleanup contract now runs through 2032. What began as an environmental experiment became a massive underwater cleanup operation — raising a much bigger question about what happens when a cheap solution is scaled before anyone knows whether it will actually work.
