The United States could be considering a major change to the H-1B visa system, with reports suggesting that officials may move to scrap the current 60-day grace period available to workers after losing their jobs.

Under the existing system, eligible H-1B visa holders who lose employment can generally remain in the United States for up to 60 days, or until their authorized stay expires, whichever comes first. The period gives workers time to find another employer, change immigration status or make arrangements to leave the country.

If the reported proposal is implemented, H-1B workers could face much tighter timelines after employment ends.

The move could particularly affect Indian professionals, who make up the largest share of H-1B beneficiaries. Many Indian workers are employed in the US technology and engineering sectors, where layoffs and job changes can create uncertainty.
