Canada honours fallen peacekeepers on 52nd anniversary

Veterans, current military personnel, and RCMP members gathered to mark National Peacekeepers' Day on Aug. 9, honouring decades of international peace support missions and those who died in service. CTV's Josh Marano reports that veteran Samson Young, who retired in May after more than 35 years of service, including a 2013 deployment to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, reflected on the sacrifices made by peacekeepers overseas. Lt.-Gen. Darcy Molstad, commander of the Canadian Joint Forces Command, emphasized the courage and empathy required when serving in difficult conflict environments. A total of 130 Canadian Armed Forces members have lost their lives on peacekeeping missions since 1948, including nine peacekeepers killed in 1974 when their UN transport plane was shot down over Syria.
