A remarkable Roman-era shipwreck dating back to between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC has been discovered off the coast of Sicily.
The underwater archaeological discovery was made around 46 metres below the surface, where researchers found hundreds of ancient amphorae scattered across the seabed, along with ancient lead anchor stocks.
The discovery offers a rare glimpse into maritime trade and seafaring during the Roman era. The ancient vessel and its cargo could provide valuable information about the movement of goods across the Mediterranean more than 2,000 years ago.
