Budapest switched off decorative lighting at major landmarks including the Hungarian Parliament, Buda Castle and the Chain Bridge as Hungary introduced energy-saving measures amid a record-breaking heatwave. Officials said the exterior illumination would remain off while it placed additional pressure on the country’s electricity grid. Prolonged drought and record-low water levels on the Danube River forced Hungary’s only nuclear power plant to sharply reduce output because of limited cooling water availability. Authorities have also urged industries and households to reduce electricity consumption as temperatures reached 41 degrees Celsius in parts of the country, while Budapest recorded its hottest overnight temperature on record.
