Memory Stocks Just Got Crushed — But Look at the Numbers
SanDisk and Western Digital just delivered massive earnings, and both stocks sold off hard. So is the memory supercycle finally peaking, or is Wall Street misreading what’s happening underneath the surface?
In today’s Market Signal, we break down the post-earnings volatility across SanDisk (SNDK), Western Digital (WDC), Micron (MU), and Seagate (STX) and separate the short-term market reaction from the structural signals coming from the memory industry.
SanDisk just reported 372% year-over-year revenue growth, 84.6% gross margins, and $93.9 billion in minimum contracted revenue commitments, yet shares continued lower. Western Digital delivered another strong quarter but plunged 13%, while Seagate moved in the opposite direction. Meanwhile, Micron collapsed to $827 before staging a massive intraday rebound.
We dig into Wall Street’s biggest concerns surrounding SanDisk, including ASP-driven growth, potentially peaking margins, buyback strategy, and elevated expectations, and examine whether those concerns actually undermine the long-term thesis.
Then we look at an important new Citi report arguing that the AI-driven memory upcycle may still be in its early innings, with multi-year LTAs and advance payments potentially changing the economics of the traditional memory cycle.
We also examine reports that Nvidia is testing different HBM configurations for next-generation Rubin Ultra GPUs. Rather than simply focusing on HBM content per GPU, the bigger question may be whether extreme memory constraints are beginning to influence the architecture of AI systems themselves.
