US President Donald Trump says ongoing talks between Washington and Tehran could avert a new US military strike on Iran.
Speaking at a public event in Las Vegas, Trump claimed the United States had been prepared to launch what he described as its biggest military attacks since World War Two before Iran sought talks.
He alleged Iranian officials had asked Washington not to carry out the strikes, although Tehran has denied making such a request.
Trump said negotiations are continuing and insisted Iran now "respects" the United States.
He also repeated that no previous US president had taken such a firm approach towards Iran, while maintaining that Tehran must never be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon.
