Sinn Féin once looked unstoppable. They were polling in the mid-thirties, Mary Lou McDonald was being spoken about as the next Taoiseach, and the old Fianna Fáil–Fine Gael order appeared to be living on borrowed time.

Now the Government is deeply unpopular, a majority of voters believe Ireland is heading in the wrong direction—and Sinn Féin are still stuck on just 20%.

So what happened?

In this video, I examine Sinn Féin’s fall from their polling high, their disastrous inability to capitalise on public anger, the loss of voters on both the left and right, Mary Lou McDonald’s struggling approval rating, the Dublin Central by-election humiliation, and the uncomfortable question nobody in the party seems able to answer:

Even if Sinn Féin finish first—who exactly are they going to govern with?

The Government is vulnerable. The public is furious. The opportunity was enormous.

And the Shinners blew it.
