Drought now grips Wales and half of England, leaving much of the country painfully dry. In East Sussex, sweet corn burns to a crisp and wheat is harvested a month early. England records its driest July ever, with just 7% of normal rainfall and 78% of rivers below typical levels. Farmers see wheat yields down by 25–30%, and other spring cereals possibly worse, as risk becomes their daily reality.
