Two experienced climbers turned back from Broad Peak that week.
Nirmal Purja didn't.
On July 30th, 2026, the Broad Peak avalanche killed ten people — including
the man who had climbed all fourteen 8,000-metre peaks in under seven months
and, by every reasonable measure, had nothing left to prove.
He went back anyway. For a third lap.
What I keep coming back to isn't the avalanche. Avalanches happen on these
mountains. Every person on that slope had already accepted that, the moment
they laced their boots. The snow doesn't care about records or reputations —
it cares about load, temperature, and slope angle, and at around nine in the
morning it stopped cooperating.
What I can't get past is what happened next. Or rather, what didn't.
According to a representative of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, roughly
thirteen hours passed before the avalanche was formally reported. Thirteen
hours, in terrain where rescue depends entirely on helicopters and daylight.
Nobody is alleging malice — high-altitude search and rescue is one of the
hardest logistical problems on earth, and delays usually come down to
something completely unglamorous. But "understandable" and "acceptable"
aren't always the same word, and people who do this for a living are already
asking, quietly, whether something in that chain needs to change.
This is what's confirmed, what's still being pieced together, and the
question I don't think anyone has fully answered yet.
