Tamil Nadu Assembly Erupts: TVK Targets DMK Over ₹10 Lakh Crore Debt During Budget Session | N18V
Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin returned to the Tamil Nadu Assembly to attend the Budget Session, a day after his arrest over remarks allegedly made during a party protest.
As he entered the Assembly, DMK MLAs welcomed him warmly, with scenes drawing significant political attention. His return comes amid heightened political tensions following his detention and subsequent release.
The Tamil Nadu General Budget for 2026–27 is presented by Finance Minister N Marie Wilson. This marks the maiden full budget of the newly formed government, projecting total revenue receipts at approximately ₹3.44 lakh crore, with an emphasis on youth welfare, women's empowerment, and fiscal accountability.
Amid heightened expectations, the maiden Budget of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led coalition government in Tamil Nadu headed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will be presented in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday (August 5, 2026). Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson will present the State Budget for 2026-27 in the Assembly.
TVK-led government had released a White Paper on the State’s finances flagging several shortcomings and irregularities in financial management under the previous regime. The White Paper said Tamil Nadu’s actual outstanding debt stood at ₹13.18 lakh crore, including the combined debt of public sector undertakings. It also flagged a “revenue collapse” and highlighted the declining share of the State’s Own Tax Revenue (SOTR) compared with that of several other States. TVK government fulfilled some of its poll promises. These include the formation of the Singappen Special Force to prevent crimes against women and children, providing 200 units of free electricity to domestic consumers whose bimonthly consumption is up to 500 units, administrative sanction for an Anti-Narcotic Drugs Unit, and waiver of cooperative crop loans up to ₹75,000.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Tuesday condemned the arrest of its Youth Wing Secretary and Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin, alleging that the TVK government had registered a false case against him after he criticised the ruling dispensation over the Cauvery issue. The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed Udhayanidhi Stalin to cooperate with the ongoing police investigation and appear for questioning. The court also instructed authorities to release him after completing the inquiry. The order came amid political uproar over Udhayanidhi's detention in connection with his remarks on actor Trisha.
