PENSACOLA, Fla. -- We now know the pilot of the small plane that made an emergency landing Monday morning on I-10 east in Pensacola.
The flight instructor is 21-year-old Emily Shelton.
The student she was flying with was on his first ever lesson. Thankfully, the two walked away without injuries.
Dramatic video captured by truck driver Eric Jordan shows Shelton fly the plane under overhead sign structure on I-10 before landing on the highway.
Air Traffic Control audio reveals Shelton -- who has logged approximately 1,300 hours of total flight time -- reported the smell of burning oil in the cockpit, which led to the emergency landing.
WEAR News talked to George Sigler on Tuesday. He's a retired Navy and commercial pilot, as well as a flight instructor.
"The first choice probably is not the land on a highway, but in this case, they didn't have any other choice," Sigler said.
The plane is a Piper aircraft used by Pensacola Air Flight School.
