4 identical sisters. 4 diagnoses. And a truth their doctors wrote down — then decided didn't matter.
In 1930, four identical baby girls were born in Lansing, Michigan, and named by a newspaper contest after the hospital they were born in: Edna, Wilma, Sarah, and Helen — for Edward W. Sparrow Hospital. They were famous before they left the maternity ward. They toured as a tap-dancing quartet through the 1930s and 40s. Their father was elected to public office on the strength of their fame.
By 1955, all four had been diagnosed with schizophrenia — a statistical near-impossibility that made them the most valuable case in American psychiatry. The newly formed National Institute of Mental Health brought the family to Bethesda, where more than thirty doctors and psychiatrists studied the sisters for three straight years. NIMH gave them a false surname to protect their privacy: Genain, from the Greek, meaning "dire birth." And it gave them four false first names — Nora, Iris, Myra, and Hester. N.I.M.H.
The institute named them after itself. It was the second time in their lives that strangers had done exactly that.
This is the true story of the Morlok quadruplets — the abuse inside the house that the researchers documented and judged inconsequential, David Rosenthal's 600-page study, the mother blamed for a violent father's behavior, and the fact that four women with identical genes lived four completely different lives. The sister who was treated best lived to 95 and wrote her own book.
