Italy has temporarily reinstated controls on arrivals from Spain after an estimated 60,000 migrants crossed into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco, triggering one of Europe's biggest migration crises in recent years. The move by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has fuelled calls for tougher measures across the European Union, with several leaders demanding stronger border protections. Spain has defended its response, saying tens of thousands of migrants have already returned to Morocco and insisting there is no onward route into mainland Europe. Meanwhile, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has rejected calls to isolate Spain from the Schengen zone, exposing divisions within Europe over how to respond to the crisis.
