The Danube River fell to a record low level in Budapest this week as prolonged drought, successive heatwaves and a severe rainfall deficit gripped Central Europe. Hungarian authorities measured the river at just 23 centimeters on Wednesday, below the previous record set in 2018, before it dropped further to 21 centimeters on Friday. The low water levels have exposed sections of riverbed normally hidden beneath the surface, disrupted cruise traffic and raised concerns over tourism, shipping and water resources. Residents described the sight as unprecedented, with some warning that the shrinking Danube highlights the growing impact of climate change and increasing pressure on Europe's waterways.
