Why Your Home Assistant Entities Need This 2026.8 Update

AI Article: Perplexity Google Lens
Home Assistant 2026.8 just killed the one setup step every new user got stuck on — and quietly removed the word "advanced" from over 40 menus.
Here's everything new in this beta release, and what to do if your server disappears after updating.

🌐 New Default Port: Home Assistant now installs on port 80 by default — no more typing :8123 after your address. New installs get this automatically, and some existing installs will switch too. Can't reach your server after updating? Wait 5 minutes (it auto-reverts to :8123) or go straight to homeassistant.local:80 and confirm the change in Settings - System - Network.
🎛️ Advanced Mode Cleanup: The word "advanced" has been removed from 40+ places in the interface, and Developer Tools is now simply called Tools — part of a bigger push to make Home Assistant less intimidating for beginners.
🆔 Entity ID Format Control: Customize how new entity IDs are built — area, device, floor, sensor type, in whatever order works for you.
⚡ New Automations: Fresh triggers and conditions for vibration sensors and moon phase changes (yes, you can make your smart speakers howl on a full moon).
📦 Device Repairs: Devices delivered by multiple integrations now show up separately — check your Repairs page after updating so your automations still point to the right device.
☁️🔋📻⭐ Also new: a redesigned Home Assistant Cloud settings page, a searchable radio browser, a battery capacity field in the Energy Dashboard, and favorite cards when building your dashboard.
⏱️ This is the 2026.8 BETA — the final stable release lands Wednesday, August 5th, 2026.
