Backpacking the Hardest Trail in Olympic National Park!

I tried backpacking to Lake Constance, the hardest and shortest, hike in Olympic National Park! The trail journeys steeply up, totaling 3300 feet of gain in just 2.2 miles one way. But the elevation gain is not the only obstacle. To reach Lake Constance you must begin crawling over and under trees downed in a wildfire years ago, and then snake your way ever upward through a dense forest, only to reach a series of vertical cliffs you must ascend extremely carefully. On this final section one mistake could be fatal, and the trail is more like rock climbing than hiking. But the reward at the end of this trail is a gorgeous sapphire blue alpine lake perched beneath the peaks of stunning mountains! I was nervous to try this trail, and unsure if Rainer and I could make it to the elusive lake at the top, but this right of passage in Olympic National Park was too alluring to pass up!
