Rajya Sabha Passes Bill Making Insult To Vande Mataram A Criminal Offence Amid Opposition Walkout

The Rajya Sabha has passed the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, extending legal protection to Vande Mataram under the National Honour Act. The bill makes specified acts of disrespect towards the national song punishable with up to three years' imprisonment, a fine, or both. The legislation was passed amid Opposition protests and a walkout, and will now be taken up in the Lok Sabha.
