P Chidambaram Speaks On Rahul Gandhi Speech Against Amit Shah, Delhi Student Protest And Pellet Guns
In an interview, former Union Home Minister and Congress MP P. Chidambaram addressed questions regarding Rahul Gandhi's statements in Parliament alleging Home Minister Amit Shah's involvement in authorizing pellet gun usage against protesters in Delhi. Chidambaram stated, "I assume that he will take responsibility for that statement," while noting he could not comment directly on remarks made in the Lok Sabha. He affirmed that pellet guns were deployed in Delhi, resulting in injuries to three individuals, and emphasized that accountability must be established. Highlighting standard operating procedures, Chidambaram asserted, "The Delhi situation was not the rarest of rare cases," distinguishing it from anti-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir. He argued that standard protocols prohibit deploying lethal or pellet weapons against unarmed, peaceful protesters. Furthermore, Chidambaram called for an inquiry to determine who authorized the issuance and use of pellet guns by the Rapid Action Force, maintaining that parliamentary speeches remain constitutionally protected while questioning the propriety of using such force in the national capital.
