France is battling one of its most severe wildfire emergencies in decades as massive blazes rage across the southwest, threatening Bordeaux and forcing more than 220,000 people to evacuate. French President Emmanuel Macron warned the country is facing unprecedented wildfire conditions driven by extreme drought, soaring temperatures and rare "fire clouds" that accelerate the spread of flames. With another heatwave forecast and little rainfall expected, firefighters are racing to contain the Gironde wildfire before conditions worsen. European officials also warn the 2026 wildfire season could continue until early November, raising concerns over a prolonged climate and humanitarian crisis across southern Europe.
