Senator Cory Booker questioned Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche regarding his independence from President Donald Trump and his handling of various Department of Justice investigations. Booker raised concerns about Blanche's prior role as the president's personal lawyer, suggesting this background compromises his ability to impartially administer justice. Booker cited the arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, questioning Blanche's involvement. Blanche confirmed his role, stating, 'I authorized the arrest, which is my job.' Booker also scrutinised Blanche's handling of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, accusing him of failing to meet statutory deadlines and inadequately protecting the personal information of survivors when the files were eventually released. Booker highlighted that Blanche met with convicted associate Ghislaine Maxwell for two days but did not meet with the survivors. Blanche responded that he could not discuss ongoing investigations and noted that Maxwell was receiving threats prior to her transfer to a minimum-security facility. When pressed on his responses, Blanche asserted, 'You can ask the questions, but you cannot control my answers. I'm under oath, and I can answer the questions that I choose to answer them.' The questioning then shifted to corporate oversight, specifically the Department of Justice's decision to close an antitrust investigation into a proposed $111 billion merger between Paramount, Warner Brothers, and Discovery. Booker pointed out that on the day Paramount shareholders approved the merger, Blanche attended a dinner hosted by David Ellison, the head of the acquiring company. Booker argued this created an appearance of impropriety. Blanche defended his attendance, stating that all his external appearances are vetted, noting, 'When I do things outside of the, uh, outside of the department, whether it's a speech, whether it's a dinner, whether it's an event, they are approved by ethics officials.' In his concluding remarks, Booker argued that Blanche's record demonstrates a pattern of favouring the president and powerful corporations over the American people. Booker told Blanche, 'You've chosen Trump over truth. You've chosen corporations over the Constitution.' Booker stated that the attorney general's client is the public, not the president, and concluded that Blanche's nomination should fail based on his performance as Acting Attorney General and his historical allegiance to Donald Trump.
