When a 29,000-acre wildfire is threatening our community, the last thing firefighters need is one of their water tenders breaking down. So when I got the call, there wasn’t much to think about. I fired up the Zacklift, headed straight for the front lines, and got the truck loaded up before hauling it—and its 80-year-old driver—down to the shop so they could get it repaired and back where they belong.
The best part? The tow bill was exactly $0.00.
Those men and women are out there risking everything to protect our homes, businesses, and forests. The least I can do is use the equipment I already own to help keep them moving. If getting one broken truck off the fire line means they can get it fixed faster and back to hauling water, then that’s an easy decision.
Of course, nothing is ever as simple as “go pick up a truck.” We head right into the middle of the wildfire operation, work around the fire crews, get the old tender loaded onto the Zacklift, and then make the trip back to town with one very experienced firefighter riding shotgun and sharing a few stories from decades on the fire line.
