Why monsoon rains bring floods to some areas and drought to others

Monsoon season is bringing contrasting weather patterns across South Asia, with devastating floods in Pakistan, Bangladesh and northeast India, while parts of central and western India face unusually dry conditions. Rivers have overflowed, damaging homes, roads and farmland, while farmers in drier areas worry about rainfall shortages.
