Sikkim Tunnel Collapse Death Toll Rises To 20, 5 Remain Trapped, Toxic Gas Slows Rescue Efforts

A methane gas explosion inside the under-construction Teesta Hydroelectric Project tunnel in Sikkim has killed 12 workers, while 13 others remain trapped. Rescue efforts have been severely hampered by toxic gas and water accumulation inside the tunnel. The project is located in the geologically fragile Teesta River basin, where seismic activity and unstable rock formations make tunnelling particularly hazardous.
