Have We Already Seen the Semi Peak?
Has the semiconductor and memory cycle finally peaked—or is this violent selloff being mistaken for a breakdown in the underlying business?
After the sharp declines across Micron and the broader semiconductor sector, frustration is understandably high. In this video, I address the criticism directly, explain how the drawdown has affected my own portfolio, and stress-test the memory thesis using five structural signals that have historically helped identify a true cyclical top.
We examine the relationship between spot and contract pricing, the durability of Micron’s HBM backlog, industry bit-supply growth, hyperscaler capital spending, and the widening gap between trailing and forward valuation multiples.
I also break down what Micron’s options market is pricing for the week ahead, why elevated implied volatility creates additional risk for options traders, and which upcoming data points could either support or challenge the current thesis—including Taiwan export orders, Alphabet’s AI spending commentary, and Intel’s data-center outlook.
The goal is not to dismiss the pain or blindly defend a bullish position. It is to separate a brutal technical and liquidity-driven selloff from the specific fundamental signals that would indicate the memory cycle is actually rolling over.
The five questions I am watching are simple:
Is pricing reversing?
Are HBM backlogs weakening?
Is bit supply beginning to outrun demand?
Are hyperscalers pulling back?
Are forward earnings estimates starting to fall?
Until those signals materially change, I do not believe the evidence confirms that the structural memory cycle has peaked.
