Amazonian folklore is full of forest guardians said to punish anyone who disrespects their territory and some of these legends sound too specific to be pure imagination. In this video, we break down three of the most famous the one-eyed, backwards-footed Mapinguari, Yakumama, the giant serpent goddess of the rivers and the Capelobo, a brain-sucking monster born from the elderly. We trace each one back to real (and extinct) animals that may have inspired them, from giant ground sloths and ancient anacondas to giant anteaters and tapirs, backed by fossil and archaeological evidence of ancient human-wildlife encounters. We close with jaguars, the Amazon's real living apex predator, and the conservation work being done to protect them through a partnership with Planet Wild's Jaguar Mission.
