Discovering the Real Bandung, Indonesia

People often describe Bandung, Indonesia, as a city of cool weather, great food, and endless traffic. But after spending several days exploring Bandung with locals, I discovered a completely different side of the city.

Together with local storyteller Arsal Bahtiar, we venture into Pangalengan, one of the most beautiful regions of West Java, to experience sunrise above the tea plantations, ride ATVs, and tackle the rapids on a white-water rafting adventure. Back in Bandung, local creators Kimi & Alaska introduce us to the city’s creative spirit, its history, and one of its most iconic dishes—seblak.

This journey also takes us to the historic Bosscha Observatory, where we learn about Indonesia’s oldest observatory, experience the incredible performances at Saung Angklung Udjo, explore Gedung Sate, walk through the famous streets of Braga, and discover why Bandung is known as the Land of Parahyangan. From the vibrant city to the peaceful highlands of Pangalengan, this journey completely changed my perspective on West Java, Indonesia.

I’m Kristian Hansen, a Danish filmmaker documenting Indonesia’s people, culture, and remote places through cinematic documentaries. Through my Sabang to Merauke journey, I hope to share the stories, landscapes, and communities that make Indonesia so unique.
