On 17 October 1976, the Scarborough fishing trawler Admiral van Tromp left harbour on what should have been a routine fishing trip. The weather was fair, visibility was good, and the experienced crew knew the Yorkshire coast better than almost anyone. Yet, for reasons that have never been fully explained, the vessel altered course and steamed directly towards the rocks at Saltwick Bay near Whitby.
Standing beside the wreck itself, I retrace the trawler's final voyage, explore the desperate rescue attempt, remember the crew who were caught up in the disaster, and examine the official investigation into one of the most baffling shipwrecks on the Yorkshire coast. Nearly fifty years later, the central question remains unanswered: why did the Admiral van Tromp end up here?
