An Indian Startup Finds a Way Around Rare-Earth Magnets! How Does It Work?

China dominates the global supply of rare-earth magnets used in electric vehicles, making them one of the biggest strategic choke points for the global auto industry. But what if EV motors didn't need these magnets at all?

Bengaluru-based startup Vimag Labs claims to have developed a software-defined "Virtual Magnet Synchronous Motor (VMSM)" that replaces permanent rare-earth magnets with advanced control algorithms, power electronics and electromagnets. The company says the result delivers PMSM-like performance while reducing dependence on critical minerals and volatile supply chains. It has already secured multiple Indian patents and is conducting pilot projects with automotive manufacturers.
