Wonder Woman is one of the most iconic characters ever created. And yet, probably one of the most misunderstood.
She’s one of DC’s most important characters of all time, ever since her first appearance in All Star Comics
#8 in 1941 by William Moulton Marston and H.G. Peter. She’s a member of the Trinity, equal footing to both Superman and Batman. One of the first ever female superheroes. Debatably the most important woman in all of comics. Her iconography of the lasso and bracelets, and even the invisible jet are ingrained within cultural consciousness.
And yet, I have never seen a character get misrepresented in conversation and even from official stories as much as Diana of Themiscyra has. People will tell you that she’s irrelevant. Only interesting when she’s a murderer. Not worthy of being on the Mount Rushmore of comic characters.
I trace this back to the fact that she hasn’t had much luck when it comes to adaptations. There was the Lynda Carter TV show back in the 70s, which was a lot of fun especially for the time. And I’ll give the first DCEU movie some credit, there are a lot of things that I really love about it.
But then they followed it up with the disaster that is Wonder Woman 84. Gal Gadot has become a cultural laughing stock. She’s still never had an animated series after 85 years despite her other Trinity members having several. Her solo game was cancelled, so now we’re just left with the Injustice version.
And then you’ve got the mainline comics doing… all that.
James Gunn has said that he’s “working on” an animated series, we’ve got Paradise Lost on the way, and Ana Nogueira is currently in the process of writing her DCU solo movie. All of which, when they eventually happen, have a lot of potential. But still you can’t deny that DC… kind of hates Wonder Woman.
If you ask me, Wonder Woman is in nearly an identical place that Superman was in just a few years ago. Because before this huge resurgence from the past couple years, the majority of people… honestly hated Superman. They called him boring, outdated, irrelevant, only interesting when he’s evil. But now, in huge part thanks to My Adventures with Superman and the new James Gunn movie, everybody loves the guy.
And today, you will have people saying with their full chest nearly the exact same things that Wonder Woman.
So a Wonder Woman movie needs to be made with that in mind. Created with the same goal, that same intention, and that same drive that Superman was made under. To not just make a movie about Wonder Woman, but a movie to show everybody exactly *who* Wonder Woman is.
So this is my pitch for “Wonder Woman” in the DCU.
