What company is linked to the current Cyclospora outbreak?
A source close to the investigation (reported by CNN and The Washington Post) has linked illnesses to shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms served at some Taco Bell locations. As of this recording it is NOT an official government confirmation and no formal recall has been issued.
Is it the lettuce or the water?
Possibly both. Some scientists argue contaminated surface irrigation water is the real driver and the lettuce is just how the parasite reached your plate — about 45% of U.S. crop irrigation water is exposed surface water. Michigan officials still lean toward produce and no water sample has tested positive yet, so the water theory is credible but unproven.
What foods are safe to eat during a Cyclospora outbreak?
Anything cooked, anything you peel (bananas, oranges, avocados, melons), and commercially frozen produce have not been linked to Cyclospora cases. Heat is the reliable defense: cooking to about 158°F kills the parasite.
Does washing produce kill Cyclospora?
No. Washing, chlorine rinses, vinegar and freezing do NOT reliably kill it. One habit that helps: scrub the outside of melons, cucumbers and hard rinds under running water BEFORE you cut, so your knife doesn't drag the parasite from the peel into the flesh.
Can Cyclospora spread from person to person?
Essentially no. After it leaves the body it needs 1–2 weeks in the environment to mature before it can infect anyone, so it can't spread directly like norovirus. It also only infects humans — your dog, cat and other pets can't catch it or pass it on, and your meat is not a source.
Does turmeric (curcumin) treat Cyclospora?
There is no human study showing any herb treats Cyclospora. Curcumin has shown real activity against Eimeria — a close cousin parasite — in test tubes and poultry. That's a promising mechanism worth studying, not a proven human treatment, and not a reason to swap a doctor-prescribed medicine for a spice jar.
Will Cyclospora go away on its own?
In a healthy person the immune system usually clears it — but it can mean weeks of relapsing, watery diarrhea. For older adults and immune-compromised people the real danger is dehydration, which is why doctors recommend treatment for nearly everyone. Push fluids, watch for warning signs, and get a doctor's advice.
