EU launches defence partnership with Ukraine as Russia attacks Odesa

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, announcing a new EU-Ukraine Defence Industrial Partnership focused on joint drone and counter-drone production. The visit came as Russian forces continued strikes on the southern port city of Odesa, targeting civilian shipping and port infrastructure. Von der Leyen reaffirmed support for Ukraine's eventual EU membership and pledged further funding, though questions remain over how Kyiv will counter ongoing Russian ballistic missile attacks.
