Thousands of mourners gathered in Mashhad on Thursday for the final funeral prayers of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The prayers were led by his son, Mostafa Khamenei, while Iran's new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, did not attend. Crowds carrying Iranian, red and black flags filled the Imam Reza shrine, where Khamenei was laid to rest. Many touched the vehicle carrying his coffin, a gesture believed to bring blessings. The funeral came amid renewed U.S.-Iran tensions, with fresh exchanges of strikes threatening an already fragile ceasefire across the Middle East and raising fears of further regional escalation.
