Tens of thousands of people have joined a funeral procession in Tehran for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. His coffin was transported through the capital as part of six days of official mourning ceremonies. The events will conclude with Khamenei’s burial in his hometown of Mashhad on Thursday. Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said the country would continue on the path set out by its “martyred leader”, focusing on national strength. Supporters attending the procession described Khamenei as a father figure and expressed grief over his death. Some mourners also called for unity and vowed to continue resisting Iran’s opponents. The ceremonies come amid heightened tensions following recent conflict and calls from some supporters for retaliation.
