Super Typhoon Bavi is battering the western Pacific with winds of around 290 km/h and gusts nearing 350 km/h — equivalent to a category 5 hurricane. The storm, stretching more than 800 km in diameter, has already struck the Northern Mariana Islands, causing flash flooding, widespread power outages and a dangerous storm surge. Bavi is forecast to track west-northwest across the Philippine Sea before turning towards Taiwan and eastern China this weekend, where it is expected to arrive as a category 3-equivalent typhoon with winds close to 200 km/h.
