Heavy monsoon rains in Maharashtra have exposed severe infrastructure failures, causing widespread disruption and tragic loss of life across Mumbai and neighboring regions. Barely two months after its inauguration, the Rs 6,700 crore Mumbai-Pune Expressway missing link was forced to shut down following a landslide that destroyed a retaining wall near tunnel six. Commuters are facing significant hurdles with local train operations disrupted and the Mumbai-Goa highway cut off. Beyond infrastructure damage, the human cost continues to mount. In Mumbai's Mankhurd area, a three-story chawl collapsed, killing six people, including five children. Tragic tree collapses in Kurla, Goregaon, and MT Road have claimed several other lives. The heavy downpour has submerged low-lying areas in Chembur, Kurla, Andheri, and Dadar, throwing normal life out of gear. Despite repeated seasonal warnings, the maximum city faces massive waterlogging, raising urgent questions about the government's disaster preparedness, quality control of mega engineering projects, and the lack of long-term flood solutions.
