For years we were told America was the punchline. Too loud. Too big. Too much. Dangerous, even. We were told not to go.

Then 40,000 Scottish fans descended on Boston for the World Cup, and in a matter of days they did something no advert or politician ever could. They showed the whole of Europe what America is actually like.

Bagpipes at five in the morning. Police dancing in the street with the Tartan Army. Locals throwing open their doors for barbecues. Strangers begging the fans not to go home. The vibe in Boston shifted completely, and the version of America the European media has been selling for decades fell apart overnight.

We are Paul and Emelie, a British couple two and a half weeks away from celebrating America's 250th in Tennessee and a few months out from MOVING THERE PERMANENTLY and we have been saying this for years to people who would not listen.

So we sat down and talked it all through. No script, just us.
