Today's Highlights:
No bail for PH driver accused in killing of 12-year-old Mercedez Layne
• The PH driver accused of murdering 12-year-old Mercedez Layne has been remanded into custody after appearing before the court on Thursday June 11th, 2026.
• Richard Renalis, 26, of Dickie Trace, Beach Road Palo Seco, was denied bail when he appeared virtually before Master Kateisha Ambrose-Persadsingh to answer a charge of murder arising from the death of the schoolgirl.
• His court appearance happened at the time relatives were finalizing funeral arrangements for Mercedez.
• The charge was laid following advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions after investigators completed their inquiries into the case that sparked national outrage.
• During the hearing, the court outlined the procedural steps to follow, including deadlines for the submission of the prosecution's case file. The matter was adjourned to September 8 for the appointment of a State attorney, while a sufficiency hearing has been scheduled for February 4.
• Renalis was ordered to remain in custody pending the outcome of the proceedings.
• The charge stems from the tragic death of Mercedez Layne, whose body was discovered on Sunday in a bushy area off Carapal Road, Erin.
• Investigators reported that the Standard Four pupil had been placed in a PH vehicle on Saturday morning to be transported home to Los Iros.
• When she failed to arrive, relatives raised an alarm, triggering an extensive search operation involving police officers, community members and volunteers from the Hunters Search and Rescue Team. The search ended in heartbreak when the child's body was located the following day.
• A post-mortem examination later determined that Layne died as a result of blunt force trauma.
Pregnant woman loses baby after armed home invasion shatters Freeport family
• A Freeport family is grappling with unimaginable grief after a pregnant woman lost her unborn child following a terrifying home invasion by armed criminals on Wednesday (June 10th) night.
• The incident occurred at approximately 9:45 p.m. at a residence along Haniff Trace, Freeport.
• Thirty-six-year-old Chandani Rampersad, who was three months pregnant, was rushed to the Couva District Hospital after the ordeal.
• Despite medical efforts, she later suffered the devastating loss of her unborn baby.
• The woman's common-law husband, 46-year-old Curt Rodney, recounted the traumatic events to IAN News, describing the frightening moments when armed intruders stormed their home.
• While the attack remains under police investigation, it has left relatives shaken and searching for answers as they come to terms with the tragedy.
Teen girl complains of headache, dies hours later; mystery surrounds death of 15-year-old
• A 15-year-old Diego Martin girl who reportedly complained of a headache to her mother on Wednesday afternoon has died suddenly, leaving relatives searching for answers as police investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
• The deceased has been identified as Amy Reverand, of Cassia Drive, Petit Valley.
SOE extension approved in Lower House— 28 voted in favour, 12 against
• The Government's motion to extend the current State of Emergency (SoE) for a further three months was approved in the House of Representatives shortly after midnight on Thursday, June 11, 2026, following hours of debate.
• The motion, piloted by Attorney General John Jeremie SC, was passed with 28 votes in favour and 12 against, giving the Government the special majority required in the Lower House.
