As the United States military shifted its focus to an aircraft capable of unprecedented strategic reach, North American Aviation produced a magnificent stainless steel giant. Learn how the Valkyrie overcame extreme thermal thickets by employing compression lift aerodynamics and utilizing its own jet fuel to cool internal avionics. We break down the grueling phase one flight tests commanded by Chief Test Pilot Al White and Colonel Joe Cotton, highlighting the meticulous preparations and ground support equipment required to get the 1.4 billion dollar project off the tarmac.
Despite achieving its design goal of Mach 3, the XB-70 never entered active service due to the rapid evolution of Soviet surface-to-air missiles and the strategic shift toward Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. I also want to integrate some details about this script that are important: many parts of the vintage, rare archival footage have been restored and upscaled, and are either in color or colorized. Through incredible archival records, we analyze the transition of the Valkyrie from a doomed weapons platform into an invaluable flying laboratory for the National Supersonic Transport program, forever changing how we understand high-speed aerodynamics and high-altitude survival.
Furthermore, we delve into the tragic events of June 8, 1966. During a routine photographic formation flight, a fatal mid-air collision occurred between the Number Two XB-70 and an F-104 Starfighter piloted by Joe Walker. The massive vector forces from the Valkyrie's wingtips pulled the smaller jet into its stabilizers, resulting in the loss of the Starfighter, the heavy bomber, and the lives of both Walker and Major Carl Cross. Chief test pilot Al White barely escaped using the aircraft's revolutionary clamshell ejection capsule. Follow the journey of the sole surviving Valkyrie as it logged its final flights before being retired to the National Museum of the United States Air Force.
