Sublime is experiencing a renaissance, releasing its first album in 30 years and building on the band’s legacy and sound. The ska punk band from Long Beach California, also appeared on Good Morning America in Central Park before heading to the Island Rhodes festival in Rhode Island this weekend. The album Until the Sun Explodes is a tribute to the late lead singer, Bradley Nowell, who died in 1996, and his son, Jakob, has joined the remaining members as the lead singer and catalyst for this surge in popularity, electricity, and contagious vibes. Sublime's core members today are Jakob Nowell (lead vocals), Eric Wilson (bass), and Bud Gaugh (drums), along with their guitarists and DJ. Their debut single off the new album, “Ensenada,” spent 8 straight weeks in the number one slot on the Billboard Alternative charts. Jakob said, “It seems like fans are really digging it, so I am really proud of how it came out.”
Fans who attended the Good Morning America set lined up at the crack of dawn to get a glimpse of the band and catch a vibe. Then the band performed “Santaria,” “What I Got,” "Until the Sun Exlodes," and “Paddle Out." It was a unique experience for their super fans, and what a way to kick off a beautiful Friday morning in Manhattan with Jakob’s kinetic energy. He and the band are fully embracing the moment. From jumping around the stage to engaging with the crowd, and the DJ skateboarding between scratching and mixing, it captured beach vibes in the heart of the Big Apple.
The original band formed in 1988 and released two studio albums, 1992's 40oz. to Freedom and 1994's Robbin' the Hood, before finding fame with their 1996 self-titled album, released shortly after Bradley Nowell's death. After much time away following Bradley’s sudden death, Sublime reunited in 2024 for an appearance at Coachella. Since then, the band has been recording, touring, and building momentum once again, and it feels like the waves will keep rolling for Sublime and their contagious vibe.
