Google Maps is getting its biggest transformation in more than a decade with the introduction of Ask Maps, a new Gemini powered experience that combines Google Search, Maps and Gemini to help users find information, discover places and plan journeys more naturally.
Already rolled out to users in Singapore, Ask Maps allows people to ask questions about real world places and travel plans using conversational prompts. Instead of searching through multiple results, users can ask Maps what they need and receive information tailored to their request.
The new experience provides access to real time information, including a live transit board that automatically updates and alerts users to delays. For example, someone heading to a lunch appointment at Wisma Atria can ask when they should leave and how to get there, with available travel options presented at a glance.
Drivers can also receive information about real time road disruptions to help them plan their journeys. For those looking to avoid crowds, Maps provides live crowd status updates for restaurants and attractions, allowing users to better decide when to visit.
Ask Maps also makes it easier to discover places and activities nearby. Users can search for specific experiences, such as comedy shows with ticket links or suitable spots to watch the sunset. Those looking for a late-night meal can ask Maps to find nearby halal eateries that remain open after 10pm.
Recommendations can also be personalised based on users’ prompts and previous reviews, making it easier to discover places that match their interests and preferences.
For travellers, Ask Maps brings together information that can help simplify trip planning. Users can view real time hotel prices and availability while creating routes based on their preferences. A traveller visiting Istanbul, for example, could ask Maps to plan a route covering cultural attractions around Hotel Amira Istanbul between 10am and 12pm. Ask Maps can then provide a curated journey based on the request.
Another feature allows users to continue previous conversations without starting from scratch. Ask Maps remembers past conversations, allowing users to return to earlier travel plans, recommendations or ideas and continue where they left off.
