Off the AppStore: Newt or Gecko… Simple, right?

Newt or gecko, you decide, but only the facts know You'll receive a flurry and flash of images from all sorts of artistic sources Get them all right or start from the beginning

Welcome to Off The AppStore, a weekly feature with a twist. Namely, while these - as with all the games we cover here - are games that you can play on your phone, they're ones that operate outside of the realms of the big two ways to play: The Google Play Store and the Apple AppStore.

That means that there might be a bit of work required in downloading alternative AppStores or APKs, or that the games can simply be played in your phone browser. We'll make sure to detail that for each game though. Anyway, read on to find a new game or experience to play Off The AppStore.

Can you recall the age you were when the coolest thing in the world was discovering new animals? Well, here you are now, all these years later (supposedly), and you're learning that there are still many undiscovered species. But you haven't studied all of them, and you haven't memorised all of them, and there are some that look so similar to each other that it's hard to believe they could be different species. Such a conundrum can come in the form of whether you can tell the difference between a newt and a gecko… and that's what Big Neko Games wants to see if you can in Imori vs Yamori: Newt or Gecko.

Here's your chance to prove that you can be a herpetologist, or at least an understudy of one, at the bottom of the ladder. You've received a program that has been fed all sorts of images of both newts and geckos. They range from pencil sketches to silly photographs to the shudder-inducing AI-generated horrors, and you need to be able to determine whether what you're looking at is a newt or a gecko. Luckily, you won't be going in blind, as you'll be given some pretty helpful clues to determine which is which, and you just have to use them.

The Black and White Gecko.

The experience takes advantage of the fact that our attention spans are shrinking and we spend most of our time scrolling, swiping, and tapping. You're shown each image one at a time, and you'll have only a few seconds to decide whether the creature in it is a newt or a gecko. With each correct guess, you'll move on to the next picture and the time you have will shrink ever more. The goal is to get 100 correct guesses and prove that you're a newt AND gecko expert. But, if you get just ONE wrong… then it's back to zero.

Imori vs Yamori: Newt or Gecko is a 2D swiping puzzle about guessing whether what you're looking at is a newt or a gecko. The images can be clean, or they will try to trick you (like dressing a gecko up as a newt) so that you mess up and start over. It's fast, fun, and kinda weird, but you'd be surprised how easy it is to get sucked into it and want to aim for that perfect score. But then again, nobody's perfect… well, except for newts and geckos.

Imori vs Yamori: Newt or Gecko is available to download and play from its itch.io page!
