The only way I envision you enjoying The Last House is if you're a die-hard fan of the apocalyptic/dystopian genre.
It's my opinion that this film, written by Matthew Robinson and directed by Louis Leterrier, is one hour and 50 minutes of utter drivel. It's not worth your time.
I had high hopes as I lay down in bed with a cuppa. I'm not naive, but we named it our 'August must-watch', for God's sake. We were sorely mistaken.

The Last House follows a family who suddenly find themselves locked in their house with no means of escape. A mysterious, looming threat is holding them hostage, but they have no idea who or what it is.
Days turn into years in the house, and it appears that the whole neighbourhood, nay, the whole city, has been affected.
The film was giving me war flashbacks to the COVID-19 pandemic, when we were all trapped inside our homes. The characters exhibited the same level of cabin fever a lot of us became accustomed to.
Honestly, it was like lockdown minus the Simon Harris of it all.

While they're detained in their home, the family's choice of entertainment is watching Annie over and over again.
Let me just say, if I was in a similar situation and The Last House was the only film at my disposal, I would not be a happy detainee.
The sci-fi film is led by Golden Globe nominee Greta Lee and Oscar nominee Wagner Moura, and I can't fathom why they'd choose to have their names attached to it.

'Growing up, my favorite things to watch and read were survivalist stories with a twist,' Greta told Tudum ahead of its release.
'So I was immediately drawn to this story. I love the questions this movie asks about our world and how we choose to live in it. And I was excited about the possibility of asking these questions in a new and entertaining way.'
I can confirm that these questions were not asked, nor answered, in a 'new and entertaining way'.

To help the cast and filmmakers reflect on these questions, they partnered with renowned survival consultant Megan Hine to strategise innovative and believable ways this family could persevere through such a dire predicament.
Credit where credit is due, this move worked in their favour. A believable series of events unfolded, but it didn't give the film as a whole a leg up, unfortunately.

I'll say no more because I'm not going to spoil it for you (not like I'm shouting from the hilltops for you to run to Netflix and watch it).
All I will say is that the ending of The Last House might've teed up a sequel, but I hope it doesn't get greenlit. Sorry, folks.
