Amaryllis of Naxos Ancient Greece, 378 CE.Long before the old temples fell silent and the Olympian gods were forgotten by many, the island of Naxos was ruled by a noble royal house. Its heir, Prince Aegeus of Naxos, was known throughout the island for his gentle heart, wisdom beyond his years, and a will to make his people happy. Rather than seeking glory on distant battlefields, the young prince often wandered alone through sacred groves, offering prayers beneath ancient olive trees and beside crystal clear springs believed to be blessed by the divine. On one such spring morning, destiny changed his life forever. Deep within a hidden grove untouched by mortal hands, Aegeus encountered Antheia, a beautiful Dryad whose soul was bound to the oldest flowering tree in the forest. Flowers bloomed wherever she walked, and the air itself seemed to grow sweeter in her presence. Though one belonged to the world of mortals and the other to the realm of nature’s spirits, their hearts found one another. Against all expectations, love blossomed between the prince and the nymph. In time, Aegeus ascended the throne as King of Naxos, and Antheia gave birth to their only child, a daughter they named Amaryllis. Her birth was said to have been blessed by the gods themselves, as flowers bloomed across the island in the middle of winter. But joy is often fleeting in the tales of gods and mortals. Not long after Amaryllis’s birth, Antheia’s life came to an end. As a Dryad, her soul was forever bound to the sacred tree from which she was born. When that ancient tree withered, so too did the nymph’s life. Surrounded by falling blossoms, she returned peacefully to nature, leaving behind only the fragrance of flowers, a gentle breeze, and a daughter too young to remember her mother’s face. From that day onward, King Aegeus raised Amaryllis alone, ensuring she would know the stories of her mother, the beauty of the world, and the kindness that had once united a mortal king with a nymph of the sacred grove. Soon after Princess Amaryllis birth, King Aegeus journeyed to the sacred Oracle, seeking to learn what future awaited his only child. The priestess listened as the whispers echoed through the temple before delivering a prophecy that would haunt the royal family forever. “The child born beneath winter’s flowers shall never know the strength of ordinary flesh. Her body shall wither before its season, yet her soul is destined for a realm beyond mortal dreams. Though sorrow shall claim her first life, she shall rise where even the gods cast their gentle gaze, becoming a light to those who wander in darkness.”From that day onward, Amaryllis’s health remained fragile. She was often overcome by fever, exhaustion, and long periods of sleep, leaving the royal physicians unable to cure what no mortal illness had caused. Some believed she had been blessed by the Olympian gods, while others whispered that she carried a fate too great for the mortal world. Despite her frailty, Amaryllis grew into a gentle, compassionate, and curious princess whose heart remained brighter than the burden she carried. Though her body remained delicate, her spirit was filled with wonder. She spent her days wandering through the palace gardens, listening to the songs of poets, studying the stars above the Aegean Sea, and collecting stories of heroes, gods, and forgotten kingdoms. Like her mother Antheia, she possessed a deep connection with nature; flowers seemed to bloom more brightly in her presence, and animals approached her without fear. King Aegeus loved his daughter more than anything in the world. Having already lost Antheia, he feared losing Amaryllis as well. He surrounded her with the finest healers, philosophers, and teachers from across Greece, hoping that knowledge and devotion could change the fate written by the Oracle. She would hear her father cry every night, praying for her health and that gods would take a mercy and spear his only child. She was scared, scared not to die but to leave her dearly father behind and stay alone for eternity. Since her body was literally for no use, so weak that even walking was hard, she would spend her days in bed looking into the window, watching others play and have fun while she had to be in here. On her thirteenth birthday she spent her time under the olive tree, reading a book until she fell asleep, she dreamed of her mother Antheia standing beneath a field of endless flowers. The nymph reached out to her daughter and whispered.“Do not fear the end of your mortal journey, my child. Some souls are not meant to remain in one world forever.”When Amaryllis awoke, she felt a strange peace within her heart. She did not know that the prophecy spoken at her birth was finally beginning to unfold, and finally at the age of fourteen her mortal life had ended…but her true purpose had only begun. Darkness. There was no pain. No fear.Only silence. For what felt like an eternity, Amaryllis drifted through an endless sea of stars, her soul no longer bound to the world she had left behind. Memories of her mortal life flickered around her like distant constellations her father’s warm embrace, her mother’s gentle smile, the gardens of Naxos, and the dreams she had treasured as a child. Then…A single butterfly of shimmering light landed upon her hand.Another appeared. Then another.Thousands of celestial butterflies emerged from the darkness, their wings glowing with hues of sapphire, rose gold, silver, and moonlight. They circled her spirit, carrying fragments of forgotten dreams gathered from every sleeping soul across the universe. The butterflies guided her toward an enormous blossom unlike any flower that had ever existed on Earth. Its petals were woven from starlight itself, floating at the heart of the Butterfly Nebula. As Amaryllis entered the flower, it slowly closed around her, cradling her soul like a mother’s embrace. For two thousand days and two thousand nights, the celestial blossom remained sealed.Within it, the broken pieces of her mortal existence faded away. The sickness that had burdened her since birth disappeared. The scars of sorrow became silver markings upon her soul. Her heartbeat synchronized with the rhythm of the stars. When the flower finally bloomed once more, a wave of brilliant light spread throughout the nebula.Amaryllis opened her eyes.No longer did she wear the fragile body of a mortal princess. Her hair shimmered like moonlight upon calm waters. Her wings unfurled behind her, soft as clouds and radiant with the colors of dawn. Her gown flowed like the night sky itself, embroidered with countless tiny stars and blooming flowers in memory of her mother, Antheia.Around her head appeared a delicate halo resembling the full moon, while glowing butterflies rested peacefully upon her shoulders. The dreams of countless sleeping souls drifted gently through the nebula, and for the first time, Amaryllis could hear every whispered wish, every hopeful prayer, and every silent tear carried within them.A warm voice echoed across the heavens.“Rise, child of dreams.”“The mortal world knew you as a Princess.”“The heavens shall know you as Amira Morpheus, the Guardian”As she took her first breath in her new form, the Butterfly Nebula blossomed with millions of flowers made from pure starlight. The age of the princess had ended. The age of the Dream Guardian had begun.Comment: English is not my first language so please forgive me if I have some mistakes.
