Prime Video is doubling down on its Warhammer 40,000 bet with a new animated series based on Games Workshop’s sci-fi miniature wargame of the same name. The streaming service already has a live-action 40K series in the works with Henry Cavill attached to star and executive produce and Mike Flanagan on board as showrunner and writer.
Variety reports that the new animated series is a spin-off of “Warhammer 40,000: And They Shall Know No Fear,” the 40K-based episode of Prime Video’s 2024 video game anthology series Secret Level. Dave Wilson (Love, Death + Robots), who directed the Secret Level 40K episode, is the co-creator of the new animated series, alongside John Orloff (Band of Brothers, Masters of the Air). Wilson will also direct the series.
Wilson said in a statement, “Secret Level wasn’t conceived simply as an anthology. It was designed as a launchpad for larger stories. The response to the Warhammer episode was extraordinary, particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right. This series gives us the opportunity to build on that foundation and tell a much larger story. I’ve wanted to tell a long-form story set in Warhammer 40,000 for more than twenty years, and I’m incredibly grateful to Games Workshop and Amazon MGM Studios for the opportunity to do it.”
Warhammer 40,000 is set in the 41st century and takes place in a galaxy beset by war. The human empire, known as the Imperium of Man, has expanded into conquering and colonizing outer space and is locked in a battle for control with various alien species, also known as xenos.
While there’s no official plot description yet, Variety reports that the series will feature the Deathwatch, a prestigious faction of Adeptus Astartes, aka Space Marines, who are called in to take on the most severe xeno threats.
It’s unclear which of Prime Video’s Warhammer 40,000 projects will make it to market first, but it does seem like the streamer is finally getting serious about moving these projects along after years of delays.
