Sunderland’s interest in Dayann Methalie fits the careful transfer strategy that has helped transform the club under Régis Le Bris.
The Black Cats spent heavily after winning promotion in 2025, but their recruitment was largely focused on young players with the potential to develop and increase in value.
That approach contributed to an excellent first season back in the Premier League, with Sunderland finishing seventh and qualifying for the Europa League.
Their European schedule means greater depth will be required this season, even though Le Bris does not want another major squad overhaul.
Thomas Meunier has already arrived on a free transfer to strengthen the right side of the defence, and left-back is another position Sunderland want to address.
Reinildo provided valuable experience last season, making 25 appearances across all competitions following his arrival from Atlético Madrid.
However, the Mozambique international is now 32 and has entered the final year of his contract. Meanwhile, Arthur Masuaku has also been allowed to leave after struggling for minutes, reducing Le Bris’ senior options on that side.
Methalie could provide immediate competition while gradually developing into Reinildo’s long-term replacement.
The 20-year-old is a product of Toulouse’s academy and enjoyed his breakthrough last season.
After making his Ligue 1 debut against Nice in August 2025, he quickly established himself as an important member of the first team.
Methalie made 27 league appearances, bagging two goals and two assists during an impressive first full senior season.
He also broke into France’s Under-21 side, scoring twice on his debut against the Faroe Islands.
Methalie is primarily a left-back but can operate as a wing-back or on the left of a three-man central defence.
That versatility would be particularly useful for Sunderland as they attempt to balance Premier League and Europa League football.
His height offers further value when defending crosses and set pieces, while his experience in different defensive roles should provide Le Bris with greater tactical freedom.
He remains inexperienced and would need time to adjust to the speed and physical demands of English football.
However, his age, athleticism and early performances explain why Sunderland are prepared to invest heavily.
Newcastle previously monitored Methalie but reportedly decided against making an offer, leaving Sunderland in a strong position to pursue an agreement.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke now reports that Toulouse have rejected Sunderland’s opening bid for the defender.
However, negotiations remain active as the clubs attempt to find terms acceptable to both sides.
Earlier reports suggested Toulouse could demand around £25 million, which would make Methalie one of Sunderland’s most expensive signings.
A rejected first offer does not mean the move is in danger.
Sunderland have established the player as a serious target and still have time to improve the structure of their proposal.
Methalie would not be guaranteed to replace Reinildo immediately, but he could learn from an experienced Ligue 1-winning defender while earning minutes across four competitions.
For Sunderland, the deal would combine two important objectives - improving Le Bris’ squad now and securing a possible first-choice left-back for years to come.
