We are officially in the endgame. Netflix has just dropped the highly anticipated final trailer for Outer Banks Season 5, and it’s packing a massive tease that might just change everything we thought we knew about the final season.
As we covered previously in our comprehensive Season 5 preview when the release date dropped last month, the final season is set to premiere globally on August 20, 2026, delivering a 10-episode swan song for our favorite treasure-hunting crew. But while we knew the stakes were higher than ever, this new footage drops a bombshell theory right into our laps: Are they going to bring JJ back from the dead?

The Final Trailer: Is JJ Returning?Soundtracked first by Alt-J’s iconic “Left Hand Free” (a perfect throwback to the show’s roots) and later kicking into high gear with Tame Impala’s “Half Full Glass of Wine,” the final trailer is a chaotic, explosive, and emotional ride.
But it’s the dialogue that has us pausing and rewinding. After the tragic events in Morocco in Season 4, the Pogues are left mourning the heart of their crew, JJ. However, the trailer hints at a wild, supernatural twist regarding the Blue Crown.
In the trailer, we hear:
“I already lost my best friend… The legend is that the crown can bring back the dead. Think what I’m thinking? Yeah. We might have a plan. What’s the worst thing that could happen?”
Could the ultimate treasure of the series actually be a resurrection tool? The official cast list for Season 5 notably omits Rudy Pankow, and he isn’t slated for the upcoming press events—but in the world of Outer Banks, where there is a mythical treasure, there is a way. It looks like John B., Kiara, Pope, and Cleo are going to risk it all to use the Blue Crown to bring JJ back.

What to Expect in Season 5The official synopsis for the final season promises that it will be “the Pogues against the world as they seek to avenge their best friend and bring it on home…one final time.”
“Season 5 finds the Pogues at their absolute breaking point following the tragic loss of JJ in Morocco. Stranded far from home and mourning the heart of their crew, they’ve lost the Blue Crown and continue to face a gauntlet of familiar threats. With Chandler Groff still at large, Dalia and the Corsairs closing in, and the Kooks ensuring the Pogues have no home to return to, John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, and Cleo must rely on their scrappy instincts—and an uneasy alliance with Rafe—to keep from falling apart for good. Send Off the Show at the “Pogues For Life” Fan EventTo celebrate the end of an era, Netflix is hosting Pogues For Life: A Fan Farewell Event With The Cast Of Outer Banks in Los Angeles on Saturday, August 15th.
This unprecedented farewell will feature:
The Pogue Awards: The first-ever, fan-voted OBX awards show crowning the most infinite, iconic moments from the past five seasons. Voting opens August 6th on Netflix’s side website, Tudum. Cast Q&A: An exclusive on-stage conversation with Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Carlacia Grant, and Drew Starkey. Advance Screening: Attendees will get to watch the first episode of the final season surrounded by hundreds of fellow Pogues.The event will be livestreamed, but it looks like it’s only through Tudum for now, sadly. Hopefully this gets expanded to other social platforms.
