GSC World has finally revealed the next S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 expansion, Cost of Hope. The news comes with a new trailer alongside a release date, set just one month from the announcement.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope releases on August 20, 2026, and the expansion sends Skif deeper into the Zone than any stalker has gone before, with the path to the centre of the Zone finally opening up.

The central conflict revolves around the opposing factions of Freedom and Duty. Skif will have to choose between their competing beliefs as he uncovers what has been hidden at the Zone’s core.

The teaser is only around a minute long but gives a flavor of what is coming. A new expedition forms the backbone of the expansion, with rumours of new opportunities drawing stalkers back into the Zone. New locations are confirmed, with the Iron Forest specifically highlighted as a path players will be able to explore.

Narrative-wise, players will navigate the conflicting interests of Duty and Freedom alongside a mysterious, powerful force operating within the Zone. Whether it is new or connected to the base game and its free updates remains unclear. The narrator closes the trailer by addressing Skif directly, encouraging players to “walk your own path.” The store page teases further, hinting that choices will affect outcomes throughout the expansion.

There are also some new weapons, armor, and mods, with the footage hinting at a laser sight on a silenced MP5, among other bits and pieces.

It is great to see some news on this DLC. GSC teased it near New Year’s Eve with a video slowly revealing the entrance to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The cost of Hope appears to be delivering on that promise.

With August 20th confirmed and a clear central premise established, Cost of Hope looks like the substantial return to the Zone that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 players have been waiting for. What connections will it have to the plot of the base game, where you battled toward Chernobyl? What other threads will it pick up from the additional stories built into the base game? Only time will tell.

There are no confirmed price details for the DLC yet, so keep an eye on its Steam and Xbox pages for updates.
