Why was Nico Williams’ goal ruled out during Spain vs Argentina FIFA World Cup 2026 Final?

Nico Williams scored for Spain in the first-half of extra-time against Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final but had it ruled out by the referee.

The goal was cancelled for a foul in the lead-up to the goal. Mikel Merino stamped on the toes of Nicolas Otamendi moments before Williams netted.

Referee Slavko Vincic did not need the use of Video Assistant Referee. He made the call in real-time on the ground, and had the decision verified by the VAR later.

As a result, Argentina kept the score at 0-0 and continued frustrating Spain despite being down to 10 men. Enzo Fernandez was sent off in the injury time of second half after getting a second yellow card.

But Ferran Torres found the winning goal in the 106th minute to eventually seal the win and the title for Spain.
