Latest Jammu and Kashmir news updates

Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed widespread rainfall since Sunday morning (July 19, 2026). It triggered massive flash floods and resulted in damage to public property in the Rajouri and Kishtwar districts as well. Scores of vehicles were also washed away. Landslips have also impacted traffic in these areas.

Several districts in Kashmir have issued fresh advisories for those living near streams, rivers and hilly areas, which are prone to landslips and flash floods. “People in these areas are advised not to venture into these areas till the weather improves. Tourists, travellers and transporters have been asked to check road conditions before travelling to hilly areas of the district,” said the official advisory.

J&K L-G Sinha said rescue teams from the civil administration, police, army, State Disaster Response Force and local volunteers were actively working on the ground. “Affected families have already been moved to safety. All departments are on high alert and are prioritising immediate relief and repair work,” he said.

He said the heavy rains damaged several homes across Rajouri and Poonch. “I have directed officials to provide immediate aid to all affected families in both districts and ensured that emergency teams remain fully prepared for any situation,” said Mr. Sinha.

J&K CM Abdullah also directed the authorities “to ensure that all possible assistance reaches the affected families without any delay”. Earlier, Mr. Abdullah left Delhi, where the party was planning a protest on July 20 over Statehood and constitutional guarantees, for Jammu “to personally monitor the situation on the ground”. He said National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah will lead the Monday (July 20, 2026) protest in Delhi.

“While the situation continues to unfold, the first priority of the administration is to safeguard precious lives. Rescue and rehabilitation measures are carried out swiftly and effectively in all affected areas,” said Mr. Abdullah.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah was briefed about the situation. The Home Minister assured the L-G and CM of all possible assistance from the Centre for the safety and security of the affected people, officials said.

The administration has already suspended the Amarnath Yatra from both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes with effect from Sunday (July 19, 2026), “following an adverse weather forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD)”.

The IMD has predicted more spells of rain up to Thursday (July 23, 2026) in J&K.
